Winter is coming … queue the coughing, sniffing and bugs!! I am all about prevention and I try not to take tablets unless I really need to. So when it comes to Winter you will find me doing the below to try and keep any colds at bay.
Drink plenty of water! I say it all the time but water is amazing – it can prevent so many things. If I get bored of drinking plain water, I add lemon and cucumber to it. Not only does that make it taste better but lemon is very good for fighting the nastiness that will cause you to get ill.
Garlic is very good when you have a cold! If you aren’t sick mix it into your food as much as you can, but when you are sick it’s better to just have it raw! I know it sounds gross but it helps, of course it may not work for everyone but it’s worth a try right?
Chilli’s are full of Vitamin C, which is important when protecting your body from disease. If you don’t like spicy food maybe this one isn’t for you. If you do love spicy food then surely it’s a win/win!
Eating nuts such as almonds and brazil nuts can also help. Almonds are alkaline forming which will help to boost the immune system. Brazil nuts contain selenium, which is vital for boosting your immune system. I usually eat a few nuts as a mid-morning or mid-afternoon snack! This means you are getting what you need but not having to eat a million times a day.
Get plenty of light exercise – I know it is hard to get motivated to go down to the gym or go for a run when it is freezing outside, but trust me it will make you feel so much better. Not only does exercise have benefits in terms of your health but it also helps to clear your mind and can relieve stress! I have to drag myself to the gym but the after feeling is what keeps me going. Bare in mind though that putting your body through a hard core gym workout when you have no energy at all can do more harm than good.
If you want to get really fancy, I have echinacea tablets if I can feel a cold coming on. If you don’t like tablets you can also get tea which has echinacea in it, so it’s up to you.
The most important thing is to get rest and make sure you are not pushing yourself too hard (easy said than done, I know). Hopefully these tips keep you all well over winter. Let me know if you have anymore useful tips or if you have found one of mine useful.
