Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee… That famous saying from the legend himself, Mohammed Ali. I must say I felt the appeal when I took a dive in to the world of boxing recently. There is nothing more liberating than taking all your frustration out on a punch bag. If you have ever boxed you will know the feeling of letting all your pent up anger go and just working hard for 45 minutes (or so).
BXR is a luxurious gym in the heart of Marylebone, with investors like Anthony Joshua, they have highly trained and sought-after instructors. Upstairs is members only, with an amazing boxing ring and gym floor, but downstairs they have three rooms all set up to achieve a specific goal.
The boxing class at BXR was one of the most liberating fitness experiences I have ever had. I walked out of the class feeling lighter and full of energy. A few hours later, I started to feel that ‘after class’ ache but I was still on a high. I couldn’t believe how much that one class change my mood, not to mention I slept like a baby.
The class itself (Tanya’s on a Wednesday night) is about technique rather than ‘cardio’ drills. You learn how to punch the bag correctly, along with stances and basic boxing discipline. There are classes out there that focus more on cardio but I quite enjoyed the focus of this particular session. You could really hone in on what you needed to improve and also give yourself a sense of control over your body and actions.
I would completely recommend going there although, non-member prices are around £30 a class so it isn’t the cheapest around. If you are doing boxing you will need to by the wrap gloves on top. If you are anything like me, you’ll have all the gear, no idea but you’ll definitely be desperate to return.
Have you ever tried boxing? Did you like it?
