All About Epsom Salts

Epsom salts are not new to the beauty world but they are a new addition to my world. I have really been enjoying getting in Epsom salt baths and just relaxing for 20 minutes or so. It’s a little bit of ‘me time’ with minimal effort but maximum return. It not only relaxes me but also has tonnes of other benefits so for anyone who is wondering here they are…

Eases stress and relaxes the body (the science bit)

Stress drains the body of magnesium and increases levels of adrenaline. Epsom salts dissolve effortlessly in warm water and when absorbed through the skin it replenishes magnesium in the body.

Magnesium helps to produce serotonin, which boosts your mood and creates a feeling of calm and relaxation. Research shows that magnesium also increases energy and stamina by encouraging the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Experts believe that bathing with Epsom salt at least three times a week helps you to look better, feel better and gain more energy. Magnesium ions also help you relax and reduce irritability by lowering the effects of adrenaline. They also improve sleep and concentration, and help muscles and nerves to function properly. *

Eliminates toxins from the body

The sulfates in Epsom salt help flush toxins and heavy metals from the cells, easing muscle pain and helping the body to eliminate harmful substances. Your skin is a highly porous membrane and adding the right minerals to your bathwater triggers a process called reverse osmosis, which actually pulls salt out of your body, and harmful toxins along with it.*

Relieves pain and muscle aches

It is well known that some athletes soak in Epsom baths to relieve muscle aches and pains. I always use these along with a muscle soak bubble bath to give some extra TLC if I’ve (finally) made it to the gym.

Exfoliate skin

Rub a handful of Epsom salt over damp skin to exfoliate skin. It will remove dead skin cells and reveal soft to the touch skin. I also use an exfoliating glove to pack a punch, especially with winter coming up.

I have only started using them but can already feel the benefits so I will be sure to keep you updated on any developments!

Do you use Epsom salts? How do they benefit you?
